Stones...

These are several pictures of the actual memorial that was crafted near the crematoria sites. It’s a massive exhibit, and you can tell from several of the photos that the predominate motif is that of stones laid on their sides in a rough pattern. My understanding is that Jewish custom places stones on the graves of loved ones as a memorial and mark of remembrance, and indeed, on each of the crematoria, tomb-stones, barracks, or other items, there are stacks and piles of both large and small stones on top of each. Fitting, therefore, that the monument as a whole commemorates this custom, and plaques along the bottom in some 20 main languages read with the phrase “Forever let this space be a cry of despair, and a warning to humanity, where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women and children, mainly Jews, from various countries of Europe. Auschwitz – Birkenau. 1940 – 1945.”
