The Drainage Ditch...

The people who maintain Birkinau did an amazing job of putting descriptions with SS photos just where the events described happened. For instance, this drainage ditch was dug by conscripted prisoner labor, and an SS photo showing such is placed right to the side of the ditch itself (see current photo as well). Every time they did this, I had a bizarre sort of mental and emotional “whip lash” as looking at the picture from 60 years ago somehow snapped the reality of standing there more starkly into contrast.
