Bookshelves at Best...
The prisoner barracks sported several of these 3-tiered bunks, each of which was no wider than about 18”, and had a rickety wooden base. According to the sign, more than 150 people would occupy a single barracks, which, as it used to be a Polish army encampment, was originally meant for only a few horses each. As I stared at the bunks and the barracks, I was struck with how the bunks just looked like rows of bookshelves, and how someone my size would be hard pressed to even fit on one, much less with 149 other people trying to fit and squeeze as well.
